Nuun Review UK 2026: Honest Verdict After the PFAS Finding
Nuun is in every UK gym bag. The PFAS screening result almost no other review mentions is why it did not make our ranked list.

Nuun is the tablet in every UK running shop bag, propped on gym counters and dropped into water bottles at parkrun, and it has been for two decades. What almost none of the reviews sitting above this one on Google mention is that an independent 2023 laboratory screen found detectable fluorine, an indicator of possible PFAS content, in one of three Nuun samples it tested. This review answers the question most Nuun searches are actually asking: is the tablet good, and is there anything about it nobody has told you.
The product assessed and referenced throughout is Nuun Sport, the flagship tablet that dominates UK search traffic. UK retailers now sell the same formulation under the name Nuun Ultra Hydration, a straight rebrand Nuun confirms on its own retail listings. Nuun Ultra, Energy, Immunity and Vitamins are a different part of the range and are not reviewed here.

Our Verdict on Nuun
Nuun Sport is cheap, low in sugar, and well liked by reviewers for its taste, and it is not on the roster of our best electrolytes UK guide. Both things are true at once. The tablet delivers a modest, sensible electrolyte dose for everyday hydration and light-to-moderate training, and it does that job well. Against the pillar's own formulation-purity criteria, Nuun sits mid-table on ingredients and sweetener choice, publishes no per-lot heavy-metal or PFAS certificate of analysis, and one of its products returned a detectable-fluorine result in independent screening.
If a published purity test is not what you are buying on, Nuun works exactly as advertised for casual use. If it is, three brands on our roster publish one and Nuun does not. Neither position is alarmist, and neither is a pass. It is the honest read of what the evidence in this review actually shows.
Works for: everyday hydration, moderate exercise under 60 minutes, cool UK training conditions, buyers who want a low-sugar habit and do not weight independent purity testing heavily.
Look elsewhere if: a published per-lot heavy-metal or PFAS certificate of analysis is a condition of purchase, or your sweat losses run above 60 minutes at a time.
What Is Actually in a Nuun Sport Tablet
Each Nuun Sport tablet dissolved in 500 ml of water delivers five electrolytes, all at a maintenance dose rather than a sweat-replacement dose.

| Electrolyte | Per tablet | Form used |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 300 mg | Sodium bicarbonate and carbonate |
| Potassium | 150 mg | Potassium bicarbonate and chloride |
| Magnesium | 25 mg | Magnesium oxide |
| Calcium | 13 mg | Calcium carbonate |
| Chloride | 40 mg | Via potassium chloride |
The tablet also carries 1 g of sugar from dextrose, stevia leaf extract for sweetness, citric acid for the fizz, and natural flavours. It is vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and Informed Sport certified. Informed Sport is a banned-substance screen, useful for competing athletes checking for prohibited ingredients, but it does not certify purity, cleanliness or manufacturing quality, and it says nothing about heavy metals or PFAS.
One formulation point worth flagging on its own: the magnesium is supplied as magnesium oxide, a form with meaningfully lower bioavailability than magnesium citrate or glycinate. At 25 mg per tablet with low fractional absorption, Nuun's contribution to magnesium status is small. Anyone using Nuun specifically to close a magnesium supplement gap will get a more absorbable dose from a dedicated citrate or glycinate product.
The Mamavation PFAS Finding, and What It Does and Does Not Mean
In 2023, the consumer-testing site Mamavation commissioned an EPA-certified laboratory, which the source does not name, to screen 40 electrolyte products from 30 brands for indications of PFAS, using total organic fluorine as the marker. Total organic fluorine is not a measurement of any single named PFAS compound and is not itself a regulatory breach. It indicates that synthetic fluorinated chemicals, of which PFAS are one family, may be present above the 10 ppm detection threshold the lab applied. Nine of the 40 products screened, 23 per cent, came back above that threshold.
Nuun was one of the brands tested, and the full result is more nuanced than the single figure usually quoted. Of three Nuun samples, one, Hydration Sport Tropical, measured 18 ppm total fluorine. The other two, including a different lot of the same Tropical flavour, returned non-detect. Reporting all three together is the accurate version of the finding, not a softened one.

Nuun has not published its own PFAS testing and does not publish a certificate of analysis, a lab document confirming what a specific batch actually contains, for any tablet or lot. That gap matters because the result varied lot to lot on the same flavour: a buyer has no way to know which lot they hold. LMNT, reviewed separately on this site, does publish per-lot certificates of analysis.
This is not a finding that a named PFAS chemical is present in Nuun's tablets, and it is not evidence the product poses a safety risk. The detection was flavour-specific and lot-specific, and two of three tested samples came back clean. It does mean Nuun cannot currently answer the purity question with its own published evidence. Why Nuun Is Not on Our List
The Best Electrolytes UK: 22 Picks Ranked on Purity ranks 22 brands against six criteria in this order: ingredient count, published heavy-metal testing, sweetener quality, sugar load, named salt source, and sachet usability. Nuun does not appear on that roster, and three things decide it: no published per-lot heavy-metal or PFAS certificate of analysis exists for any Nuun product, Nuun sits mid-table on ingredient count and sweetener choice against brands using a single clean sweetener at a lower total additive load, and one of its three tested samples in the Mamavation screen returned a detectable-fluorine result.
This is a distinct decision from the verdict above, not a restatement of it. Nuun can still be a sensible everyday hydration tablet for casual use and still fail a purity-first ranking built for readers who weight published testing heavily. Both statements hold. If published purity evidence is the deciding factor for you, see the full ranked roster, which includes brands that do publish per-lot testing.
Is Nuun Safe to Drink Every Day?
Nuun states up to three tablets per day as its own safe upper range. One tablet daily contributes 300 mg sodium, well inside the EFSA dietary reference value of 2.0 g of sodium per day for healthy adults, alongside normal dietary intake. At the recommended dose, there are no established adverse effects for healthy adults. The stevia sweetener can cause digestive sensitivity for people with IBS or a stevia intolerance, and drinking before the tablet fully dissolves can cause mild bloating.
Above three tablets a day, cumulative sodium intake can push past the NHS recommended maximum of 6 g of salt per day if dietary sodium is already high, which is the signal to watch for rather than a single alarming threshold. Anyone with kidney disease, hypertension, or a condition requiring sodium restriction should speak to their GP before using any daily electrolyte supplement, Nuun included.
Who Nuun Is Actually For
Everyday, non-athlete use makes up the larger share of UK Nuun buyers, and the tablet is built for that reader as much as for anyone training seriously. Someone managing normal daily hydration, a new runner past the point of dehydration headaches, or a parent keeping a bottle stocked for school-run heat all get a low-sugar, pleasant-tasting option that does the job without a heavy sodium dose to think about.
For moderate exercise under 60 minutes in typical UK conditions, one tablet per session is an adequate top-up alongside normal dietary sodium. For back-to-back training days, hot-weather sessions, or anything past an hour of sustained sweating, the 300 mg sodium dose falls short of what sweat losses actually demand, and that gap widens the longer the session runs.
What Nuun Tastes Like, According to Customers
Flavour is consistently the strongest part of Nuun's reputation in verified UK and US buyer reviews. On Amazon UK, Nuun Active Tri-Berry Electrolyte Tablets (3-pack of 10) holds a 4.5-star average from 1,074 ratings, and Nuun Sport Lemon Lime (8-pack) holds 4.4 stars from 60 ratings, both checked 7 September 2026. Reviewers consistently describe the flavour as light rather than syrupy, without the chemical sweetness aftertaste common to powder rivals, though a minority note a faint stevia trailing note, particularly in Lemon Lime.
The most repeated friction point across reviews has nothing to do with flavour: the tablet takes two to three minutes to dissolve fully, and drinking it while still fizzing produces an unpleasant, bloating result. A second recurring complaint is running out mid-tube without warning, since Nuun does not sell individual UK refill pouches separate from a full tube. Neither issue is a formulation defect, but both are worth knowing before the first purchase.
What Nuun Costs Per Serving, and What You Get for It
UK pricing checked 7 September 2026. A single 10-tablet tube of Nuun Ultra Hydration costs £5.49 at Dolphin Fitness, working out to £0.55 per serving, or £7.25 at Run and Become, which confirms "Nuun Ultra is a rebrand of the ever popular Nuun Sport" with an unchanged electrolyte profile. Dolphin Fitness also lists an 8-tube bundle at £41.95, out of stock at the time of this check, which would bring the per-serving cost to roughly £0.52.
At £0.55 to £0.73 per serving, Nuun sits well below LMNT's cost, though the comparison is not like-for-like given the sodium gap covered next. No dedicated Nuun discount code is active in the UK as of September 2026, and Nuun runs no UK affiliate or referral programme.

Nuun vs the Alternatives
| Product | Sodium per serving | Sugar | Published purity testing | Approx. UK price per serving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nuun Sport | 300 mg | 1 g | None published | £0.55 to £0.73 |
| LMNT | 1,000 mg | 0 g | Per-lot certificate of analysis | Around £1.27 |
| Precision Hydration PH 1000 | 500 mg per 500 ml | Low | None published | Around £0.90 |
| Gatorade (500 ml) | Lower than Nuun per litre | Around 21 g | None published | Varies |
Nuun wins decisively on sugar against Gatorade, which carries roughly 21 g per 500 ml against Nuun's 1 g, but Gatorade or a dedicated carbohydrate-electrolyte product makes more sense where carbohydrate replacement matters as much as electrolytes, such as longer endurance sessions. Neither brand publishes per-lot purity testing, so that criterion does not separate the two.
Against LMNT and Precision Hydration, the difference is sodium dose and evidence, not quality of ingredients. LMNT delivers more than three times Nuun's sodium per serving and publishes the certificate of analysis Nuun does not. For a sweat-test-led endurance read against a specific sodium target, see the full Precision Hydration review. For the roster's published-purity benchmark, see the full LMNT review UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Nuun tablets actually good for you?
Nuun Sport is low in sugar at 1 g per tablet, contains no artificial sweeteners, and is vegan and gluten-free, covering the five minerals lost in sweat. Two honest caveats: the magnesium form is magnesium oxide, which has low bioavailability, so the 25 mg contributes little to magnesium status, and Nuun publishes no per-lot heavy-metal or PFAS certificate of analysis for any product.
Has Nuun been tested for PFAS?
Nuun has not published its own PFAS testing. In 2023, an EPA-certified lab screened 40 electrolyte products from 30 brands for PFAS indicators. Of three tested Nuun samples, Hydration Sport Tropical measured 18 ppm total fluorine; the other two, including a different lot of the same flavour, came back non-detect. Total organic fluorine indicates possible PFAS presence, not a named compound, and the result is lot-specific.
What's the safest electrolyte drink?
On the formulation-purity criteria our roster ranks against, the brands that publish per-lot heavy-metal testing are the defensible answer, and Nuun is not currently among them. LMNT publishes per-lot certificates of analysis and sits on our ranked roster. See the full best electrolytes UK guide for the complete ranked list and criteria.
Is it okay to drink Nuun every day?
Nuun states up to three tablets a day as a safe upper range. One tablet daily sits well inside the EFSA sodium dietary reference value of 2.0 g per day for healthy adults. Anyone with kidney disease, hypertension, or a sodium-restricted condition should speak to their GP before daily use of any electrolyte supplement, Nuun included.
What are the side effects of Nuun hydration?
No established adverse effects exist at the recommended dose for healthy adults. Stevia can cause digestive sensitivity in people with IBS or stevia intolerance, and drinking before the tablet fully dissolves can cause mild bloating. Above three tablets daily, total sodium intake can approach the recommended UK maximum if dietary sodium is already high.
Can you drink too many Nuun tablets?
Yes. Nuun's own stated ceiling is three tablets per day. Beyond that, cumulative sodium can push past the NHS recommended maximum of 6 g of salt daily if dietary sodium is already high, alongside the signs of excess electrolyte intake: nausea, muscle weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. This is a cumulative-dose risk, not an acute-harm one at normal use.
Does Nuun have enough sodium for running or endurance sport?
Not for sessions over 60 minutes with heavy sweating. Endurance sweat sodium losses run roughly 700 to 1,500 mg per hour, and one Nuun tablet at 300 mg replaces less than half of the first hour's loss alone. For half marathons, marathons, or hot-weather training, a product delivering 500 to 1,000 mg sodium per serving is the better fit. This is a fit judgement, not a quality judgement.
Which is better, Gatorade or Nuun?
Nuun wins decisively on sugar, at about 1 g per serving against roughly 21 g per 500 ml for Gatorade. Gatorade or a dedicated endurance product wins where carbohydrate replacement matters alongside electrolytes, typically on longer sessions. Neither brand publishes per-lot purity testing, so that criterion does not separate them.
Is Nuun more hydrating than plain water?
A 2020 study in Nutrients (PMC7600513) tested exercise-trained adults at rest, not during exercise. It found Nuun tablets improved fluid balance versus plain water in that resting state, with lower urine output and better weight retention hours later. The study never tested hydration during physical activity, so it cannot answer that for exercise.
Why is Nuun not on Balance Journal's list of the best electrolytes in the UK?
The pillar ranks on formulation purity: ingredient count, published heavy-metal testing, sweetener quality, sugar load, named salt source, and sachet usability. Nuun is mid-table on ingredients and sweetener, publishes no heavy-metal or PFAS testing, and one of three independently screened Nuun samples returned 18 ppm total fluorine, though the other two came back non-detect. That is the whole reason, stated plainly.
Where can I buy Nuun in the UK?
Dolphin Fitness stocks the single tube at £5.49 and Run and Become at £7.25, both confirmed 7 September 2026. Amazon UK carries multiple listings across flavours and pack sizes at prices that vary with stock. No affiliate link exists for Nuun in the UK, so none is tracked or embedded in this review.
