Exhale landed on my radar in 2021, around the time they moved into their Brixton roastery and started pushing lab testing as a differentiator. At that point, Balance Coffee was one of very few UK roasters publishing independent lab results. I founded Balance Coffee in 2020, so seeing another brand take contaminant testing seriously was a welcome development, not a threat. The more roasters that test, the more pressure it puts on those that do not.
This review looks at what Exhale offers, how their coffee performs in the cup, and whether the health-first positioning holds up under scrutiny.

Exhale Coffee was founded in October 2020 by Al and Kirsty, a couple who discovered their passion for coffee during a four-month stay in Bali. What started from a terraced house in central London quickly moved into a dedicated roastery in Brixton in autumn 2021.
The brand positions itself squarely in the health-conscious coffee space. Every shipment is tested nine times at an independent laboratory for pesticides, mould, yeasts, mycotoxins, and heavy metals. The beans are Soil Association Organic certified and sourced from a speciality-grade farm in Odo Shakiso, Ethiopia. Exhale holds B Corp certification, operates a carbon-minimised supply chain (shipping green coffee once per year), and uses 100% plastic-free, compostable packaging made from FSC-certified paper.
With over 130,000 customers and a 5-star Trustpilot rating from more than 6,600 reviews, Exhale has built a loyal following. The Coffee

House Roast
The flagship. Milk chocolate and roasted hazelnut on the nose. Through the body, a smooth sweetness with dried fruit character that sits comfortably in the medium range. The finish is clean and drops off without bitterness or astringency. It is designed to work across brew methods, from cafetiere to espresso, and it does that well. Not complex enough to challenge a rotating single origin from a speciality roaster, but consistent and approachable.
Dark(ish) Roast
Darker than the House but not a full dark roast. Treacle and dark chocolate on the nose, a fuller body with caramelised sugar through the mid-palate, and a slightly smoky finish. The name is honest - this is a medium-dark that avoids the charred, oily territory of commercial dark roasts.
Decaf
Swiss Water Process, maintaining the Ethiopian origin character. Lighter body than the caffeinated options, with stone fruit and a gentle sweetness. A credible decaf that does not taste like an afterthought.

Exhale is for the health-conscious coffee drinker who wants verifiable proof that their coffee is clean. If you read ingredient labels, filter your water, and care about what goes into your body, Exhale speaks directly to that mindset. It is not chasing speciality complexity or rotating origins.
