There is no other machine at this price point that pairs a real-time digital pressure display with a 58mm E61 group head and a design aesthetic this considered. That combination does not exist elsewhere in the £1,400 to £1,700 price band.

At $1,499 in the US, and an estimated £1,500 to £1,700 for UK buyers at regional launch, the Series 1 sits above the Sage Barista Pro at around £750 and does not include a grinder. If you factor in a quality grinder, the full setup is £1,700 or more. That is a meaningful investment, and the question of whether it is the right one depends on your situation.

If you are still learning the fundamentals of espresso - dose, grind, tamp - the pressure display will accelerate that learning in a way that a machine without one cannot. You see the curve. You understand what changing your grind setting actually does to brew pressure. That is genuinely valuable.

If you are already pulling confident shots and your current machine's limitation is temperature consistency, steam boiler separation, or milk workflow rather than pressure visibility, the Series 1 may not move the needle the way you expect. A dual-boiler machine at a similar price point would address those limitations more directly.

At the right stage in your espresso education, the Fellow Series 1 is a compelling choice. At the wrong stage, the Sage Barista Pro with a quality grinder at under half the combined cost will teach you just as much and leave you money for beans.

The Fellow Series 1 does not include a grinder. At this price point, pairing it with a poor grinder would be a serious mismatch - your shots will be inconsistent regardless of what the pressure display shows you.

The obvious pairing is Fellow's own Fellow Opus 2: a conical burr grinder with espresso capability, priced around £175 in the UK. It is designed to sit alongside the Series 1 aesthetically, and Fellow offer bundle pricing in the US. If you want to step up, the Niche Zero (around £499) matches the precision extraction capability of a machine at this level without becoming the bottleneck.
