The Best Supermarket Coffee in the UK: Every Aisle Ranked

UK supermarket coffees on a marble counter, led by Union Hand Roasted House Roast, Sainsbury's Espresso Fairtrade ground coffee and a Grind Craft Instant Coffee tin, with Lavazza, Kenco, illy, Tesco Finest, Costa and Nescafe Gold Blend behind

Some of the links in this article are affiliate links, which help fund our independent review work at no extra cost to you. How we assessed these products is explained in this article and our Editor Lab methodology. No brand pays to appear, and no placement is guaranteed.

Union Hand Roasted is the best supermarket coffee overall, Sainsbury's Italian Blend is the best own-brand, and Grind is the best instant - all three earned that verdict blind, against their own format only. This is the guide for a reader who has already decided a GBP 4 to GBP 7 pack is going in the trolley this week and wants to know which one. You already know indie beans exist. That is not the question you asked.

Everything here was bought at UK retail and tested blind within its own format, then scored on five weighted criteria in The Editor Lab, with cost per cup calculated from the pack price on the day we bought it. Twenty-three coffees, compared across three formats and ranked in more detail than the UK's biggest supermarket coffee round-up, the Guardian's own test, which only covers ground coffee.

Editor's Note

I have spent the better part of fifteen years sourcing, roasting and selling coffee, and seen the inside of more cupping rooms than most baristas see in a lifetime along the way. I hold an SCA barista certification. None of that makes supermarket coffee beneath tasting properly, and this guide tastes all of it properly, then says plainly which pack beat which.

These three map onto the opening verdict: Union Hand Roasted for outright quality, Sainsbury's Italian Blend as proof an own-brand pack can beat a branded one at less than double the price, Grind for speciality sourcing without a grinder.

Each won its own format on the weighted model used throughout this guide, not on price or shelf recognition. Union Hand Roasted is the only genuinely speciality-grade name here. Sainsbury's Italian Blend beat a pricier branded pack in blind tasting. Grind wins on flavour, not on being the only affiliate programme here.

How We Scored Supermarket Coffee

No pack here is ranked on price alone. Every product was scored against five weighted criteria, applied within its own format only, so an instant jar is never measured against a bag of beans.

#CriterionWeightWhat it measures here
1Product quality30%Blind cup score within format only
2Verified trust20%Origin stated, roast date present, certification checkable in the issuing body's directory
3Fit for the job20%Grind matches common brewers, sensible pack size, genuinely national stock
4Service reality10%Stocked across the big supermarkets, not a vanishing seasonal line
5Value20%Cost per 100g and per cup, never price alone

Value carries one-fifth of the score, not the whole of it. Cost per cup assumes seven grams for beans and ground, two for instant. Every price was checked live on 8 September 2026, with seven carried over from the day before.

Best Supermarket Coffee Beans

Buying whole bean means grinding it yourself, so freshness and origin transparency matter more here than elsewhere. Seven packs were tasted blind, from a genuine speciality roaster to the cheapest bag in the UK.

Union Hand Roasted House Roast Wholebean

1. Union Hand Roasted House Roast Wholebean - Best for Speciality Quality

A genuine speciality roaster stocked at Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, not a private label - stated origin, a printed roast date, £6.95 for 200g. The most expensive bag here, earned on quality and trust.

“A real speciality roaster that happens to be stocked in a supermarket.”

Sainsbury's premium tier names a single origin, Kenya, with Fairtrade certification checkable against the Fairtrade Foundation's directory. At £4.50 for 227g, a third less than Union Hand Roasted.

Waitrose's No.1 range names the specific grade, Kenya AA, correlating with steadier roasting. At £4.75 for 227g, close to Sainsbury's premium tier, more specific than most own-brand packs state.

M&S's Italian Style beans are Fairtrade certified and 100% arabica at £3.60 for 227g, without a stated origin. Not exciting, and not trying to be.

Sainsbury's Italian Blend Ground Coffee

8. Sainsbury's Italian Blend - Best for Beating Pricier Brands

Named favourably in the UK's top-ranking forum thread for this search, and blind tasting backs it up. At £3.75 for 227g, Italian Blend beat Illy, £6.66 for the same job - the branded name did not win.

Best Supermarket Instant Coffee (Including Kenco vs Nescafe)

Which?'s own instant coffee test named M&S and Waitrose joint-top scorers this year, with Douwe Egberts and Nescafe close behind. One question kept surfacing in research: is Kenco better than Nescafe.

Grind Specialty Grade Instant Coffee

16. Grind - Best Supermarket Instant Overall

Grind built its name on speciality-grade coffee, and its instant range brings that standard to a format usually reserved for cheap beans. At roughly £4.15 a tin, it costs less than Douwe Egberts or L'OR while tasting closer to filter coffee.

Own-Brand vs Branded: Does the Label Change the Coffee?

Not as much as the price implies. An own-brand pack is usually roasted by the same contract roaster as the branded pack beside it, to a different specification - why the two can taste closer than the price gap suggests.

Own-brand pickBranded pickPrice£/cupVerdict
Ground coffeeSainsbury's Italian BlendIlly£3.75/£6.66£0.12/£0.19Own-brand won blind tasting

Not a rule without exceptions: Union Hand Roasted, a genuine speciality roaster, still beat every own-brand bean, since origin transparency and roast-date discipline are differences a private label rarely matches. The same holds in instant, where Which?'s own test scored own-brand jars joint-top, not branded ones. If you default to habit, the table disagrees.

What the Supermarket Ceiling Actually Is

Say this once, plainly: none of the twenty-three coffees above will match a ten-pound bag from a dedicated speciality roaster, and the reason is not the bean or the brand. It is age. A supermarket bag typically sits for months between roasting and reaching your trolley, since the best-before date measures food safety, not flavour. Coffee tastes best within four to six weeks of roasting. See what separates speciality coffee, and how mass roasting can mask the coffee behind a bag in this guide to what roasting does not disclose.

I founded Balance Coffee in 2020 to close that freshness gap - every bag is roasted and shipped within 24 to 48 hours, not months in advance. It is not ranked above, since it does not sit on a UK supermarket shelf, but if the roast-age point changes your basket, the Coffee Starter Bundle is where that step goes. Rave Coffee, sold direct and via Amazon, sits at a similar price outside the supermarket aisle.

None of that changes the verdict for this week's shop: Union Hand Roasted for outright quality, Sainsbury's Italian Blend for own-brand value, Grind if instant is the only realistic format. For the deeper dive, see the site's best coffee beans in the UK pillar. A dedicated best ground coffee and best instant coffee guide are both in production, and a best filter coffee guide follows.

Two threads shaped that table more than any published test did. The r/UKFrugal "Best supermarket coffee" discussion, the largest UK thread on this question, points repeatedly toward Sainsbury's Italian Blend as strong value. A Sage Espresso and Coffee Machine Owners Group thread is a reminder some readers own a decent machine but still balk at a £12 bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

What supermarket has the best coffee?
Sainsbury's edges this on value, since its Italian Blend ground coffee, £3.75 for 227g, beat Illy's £6.66 pack in this guide's blind tasting. For outright quality regardless of price, Union Hand Roasted, a genuine speciality roaster stocked at Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, is the strongest single product across all twenty-three tested.
What is the best quality supermarket coffee?
Union Hand Roasted's House Roast Original Blend Wholebean, from £6.95 for 200g at Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, is the highest-scoring product tested for this guide. It carries a printed roast date rather than only a best-before, states its countries of origin, and reads as genuinely speciality-grade rather than supermarket private label.
Which is the best supermarket ground coffee?
Sainsbury's Italian Blend, £3.75 for 227g, wins the ground section outright. It beat Illy's £6.66 pack, nearly double the price, in blind tasting, and it is the same pack the UK's top-ranked forum thread on this exact search rates highly for the money.
Which supermarket own-brand coffee is considered the best?
Sainsbury's Italian Blend for ground coffee and Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Kenyan for beans are the two strongest own-brand picks tested here. Both name a specific origin or blend claim most rival own-brand ranges leave off the pack, and both scored above at least one branded competitor costing more.
What is the best rated coffee in the UK?
Among the twenty-three supermarket coffees tested here, Union Hand Roasted rates highest overall, priced at £6.95 for 200g with a printed roast date rather than only a best-before label. For the wider UK market beyond the supermarket aisle, including dedicated speciality roasters, see the full best coffee beans in the UK ranking.
Is Kenco better than Nescafe?
Kenco and Nescafe differ more in roast level than in bean quality, which is why the preference between them is a taste preference and not a quality ranking. Kenco Smooth runs lighter and less bitter than Nescafe Gold Blend. Neither is objectively better. Pick on which roast profile you prefer to drink.
Is supermarket own-brand coffee made by the same roaster as the branded packs?
Often, yes. A supermarket own-brand pack is usually roasted by the same contract roaster as a branded pack sitting on the same shelf, but to a different specification set by the retailer. That is part of why Sainsbury's Italian Blend beat Illy in this guide's blind test at less than half the price.
How old is supermarket coffee by the time you buy it?
Typically months, even when the best-before date shows years of shelf life left, since that date measures food safety rather than flavour. Coffee tastes best within four to six weeks of its roast date. Almost no bag on a supermarket shelf is that fresh, which is the honest ceiling on every product in this guide.
Which Tesco coffee is best?
Tesco Finest Fair Trade Colombian Supremo Beans, £4.20 list or £3.60 with a Clubcard for 227g, is the strongest coffee in Tesco's range tested for this guide. It names Colombia as a single origin and carries Fairtrade certification, genuinely worth the premium over Tesco's standard range, which states no origin at all.
What is Aldi's best coffee?
Aldi's Specially Selected Colombian, £2.99 for 227g, roughly nine pence a cup, is the standout. It names Colombia as a single origin, a claim several pricier branded packs on this list do not make, and in blind tasting it beat coffees that cost you considerably more.
